What a beautiful part of the world! Everyone had their own favorite ruin from Chichen Itza, Coba, Uxmal to Tulum. Having LDS guides to explain the significance of what we were seeing was a huge help. Shopping in the mercados and anything to do with water was a lot of fun. Our service project to the saints in the Merida Temple district was a favorite activity and left us feeling grateful that the gospel is true no matter where you live!
When: Saturday, June 21 - Saturday, June 28, 2003
Itinerary: Saturday - Everyone fly into Cancun.
Sunday - Coba! Coba is a small Mayan ruin in the middle of the jungle. It feels like "Raiders of the Lost Ark".
Monday - Xel-Ha! This water preserve park provides a myriad of water experiences. You can float on an inner tube down a cystal clear river with all the tropical fish. You can swim with the dolphins, snorkel in the lagoon, snuba, explore ceynotes, find fossils in the grottos and marvel at the wildlife - iguanas, boas, toucans, and pirate fish.
Tuesday - Merida Temple/Uxmal! We will present our service project to a member of the temple presidency and see the grounds. The we travel on to Uxmal where we stay at a charming hacienda, explore Uxmal (a huge Mayan ruin) in the afternoon and see the evening light show.
Wednesday - Chichen Itza! Explore the ruins (a gigantic Mayan ruin)and enjoy the mercado.
Thursday - Tulum! Tulum is a small Mayan ruin which sits on the coast overlooking the ocean. Explore the ruin and mercado.
Friday - Cancun! Play in the water, explore the city and enjoy! Saturday - Everyone flies home.
Cost: $1050 for those flying out of Salt Lake, includes airfare, ground transportation, motels, and entrance fees. $621 for those making their own flight arrangements.
