A FLEETING THOUGHT
What has happened to our schools? There are still many that are excellent, but there are very many that are failing. What has become of the teaching of values? We are told that educators must be neutral in these matters. Neutrality in the the teaching of values can only lead to an absence of values. --Gordon B. Hinckley (U.S. Mayors Conference, September 25, 1998)

EARLY CHURCH AND AMERICAN HISTORY
As a compliment to our Civics History class this year we traveled to the places and sites where democracy was first declared in this country. Because the laws of our Constitution were divinely established to allow the restoration of the Gospel we also visited important sites in early church history. We ended our trip on a fun note by visiting the Hershey Theme Park.
When: Sunday, July 8 - Saturday, July 14, 2001
Itinerary:
Sunday - Everyone fly into BWI airport.
Monday - Washington DC! Tour the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress and the Capital together. Then each group may choose which ones of the 18 Smithsonians to visit. We highly recommend at least the following three: The Museum of Natural History, The American History Musuem and The Air and Space Museum. We also suggest you visit The Holocaust Museum. Next we will see the Washington and Jefferson Memorials, the Lincoln Memorial, Reflecting Pool and Viet Nam and Korean Memorials.
Tuesday - Philadelphia! Tour the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Congress Hall, Printing Press, Old City Hall, Franklin Court, Betsy Ross House, WWII sub The Beuna, Admiral Dewey's ship The Olympia, and The National Park Visitor Center. In the afternoon, we will try an authentic Philly cheese-steak sandwich and visit the Franklin Institute of Science. This museum has tons of hands-on experiments and unusual things to do.
Wednesday - Broadway/New York City! Explore Broadway and watch Les Miserables. We will meet the LDS actors in this play at the end of the production. Next, we board a boat and enjoy a Latin music cruise around the New York Harbor. We will see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the United Nations building, etc.
Thursday - Palmyra/Cumorah! See the Visitors Center, Joseph Smith farm, the Sacred Grove and the Temple. View the Hill Cumorah Pageant.
Friday - Niagara Falls/Harrisburg, PA! Take the Maid of the Mist boat tour and explore the state park. Drive to Harrisburg.
Saturday - Hershey Park for the day! Drive back to BWI that evening for flights home.
Cost - $775 covers air travel from Salt Lake City, motels, ground transportation, entrance fees, everything except food and spending money. $575 if you are flying in from somewhere else and getting your own flight.
