About Our Teachers

     Liahona conducts criminal background checks on teachers and staff.

 

 

The teachers at Liahona are some of the finest to be found in any educational system. Our teachers are passionate about including gospel truth along with their academic subjects. They are excited about learning and impart that attitude to their students. They believe that learning can be fun as well as educational, and at Liahona, it is!

Brent DeGraff:
History

Brother DeGraff teaches the Intermediate, Freshman and Senior classes.  He is passionate about history and the principles of freedom!  His credentials include: Instructor for the Church Education System, International Director of Schools for the Center for Educational Restoration, and Operations Director and Distance Learning Coordinator for the Center for Alternative Education. Brother DeGraff creates a learning atmosphere which touches a student's heart and helps them understand the importance of the role they play in our country's future.

 

Tracy Willburn:
English

Sister Willburn has a gift for making grammar understandable and her Freshman and Senior students leave her classes extremely well prepared for college! She is dyslexic and dysgraphic and has great empathy for those who struggle with English. Despite those challenges, she graduated with honors from BYU in English and Classic Literature. She has her MA in Comparative Literature and received her Doctorate from the University of Utah. She has taught at BYU and currently teaches at Utah Valley State College. She has published several professional articles and speaks five languages.

 

Sam Neiswender:

Biology, Algebra I

Brother Neiswender teaches the Freshman and Senior Biology classes.  He is currently studying Biology Education at Utah Valley State College.  He has written curriculum for the Boys and Girls Club and mentors at-risk youth.  Brother Nieswender has been on championship Ballroom Dance teams, is an avid Yankees and Jazz fan and loves working with the students.

Danielle Beck:

5th and 6th grade, Math 6/5, Math 7/6

Sister Beck has a B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Utah Valley State College.  She is a talented harpist and pianist and also teaches music.  Sister Beck is thrilled to have her dream job - teaching her favorite age group!! 

Brittany Heiner:

Civics, Math 8/7

Sister Heiner has a passion for history and especially loves to learn about and teach history to her Intermediate, Freshman and Senior classes.  She was homeschooled and then attended and graduated from Liahona Academy. Sister Heiner went on to receive her B.A.degree in History Teaching from Brigham Young University.  Sister Heiner plays the harp and piano, loves to country dance and is a past president of the BYU Country Dance Club. 

Emily Inouye:

English, Drama

Sister Inouye teaches Intermediate and Freshman classes.  She received a B.A. degree in English Teaching from Brigham Young University.  She worked as a writing fellow and student forum directorin the honors department, as a writer for the religion and philosphy departments, and as student editor in the English department.  She also performed in several musical and dramatic productions and has taught orchestra, violin and art.

Phil Brown:

Earth Science, Algebra II

Brother Brown has been an instructor for many years at Brigham Young University.  He has several degrees and amazes us with the wealth of information at his fingertips.  

Solongo Chuluunbaatar:

Algebra 1/2

Sister Chuluunbaatar has a degree in Mathematics Education with a Master of Mathematical Science from Brigham Young University and is an adjunct faculty member at Utah Valley State College.  She is a thorough instructor and her students receive a firm mathematical foundation which prepares them well for their upper level math classes.

 

Sheldon Whitaker:

Advanced Math

Brother Whitaker comes to Liahona with a wealth of experience.  He has a B.S. degree in Electircal Engineering and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering, Operations Research, Managerial Economics.  Brother Whitaker is very thorough, an excellent teacher, and enjoys teaching.  His students leave his classes extremely well prepared.  

Administration:

Our friendly office staff is knowledgeable about education and home school issues. They are happy to assist you in any way possible.

Janet Duvall:

Sister Duvall is our delightful receptionist.  She is the person you will most likely meet with first.  If you would like to tour the school, have questions or need to check out dvds, talk to Sister Duvall.  Students and parents love her!

Sharon Moss:

Questions about Liahona?  Questions about report cards?  Wondering if you are on track for graduation?  Call Sister Moss.  Accreditation issues, Grades and Accreditation Counseling appointments are among her many duties.   

Joanne Smith:

Sister Smith heads up Liahona's Finance Department.  Contact her for any tuition or other finance related questions.    

Melody Rush:
Sister Rush has been involved in the field of education for many years.  She currently assists with the day-to-day operations at Liahona.  She also updates / maintains the Liahona database and website, so if you have any questions in these areas, please contact her.

Kolleen DeGraff:

Sister DeGraff is Liahona's administrator. She has a Bachelors degree in Communications, has taught at Salt Lake Community College and co-authored several books including "When Together Forever Doesn't Last", "Threads of Liberty", the "Wisemen Raised Up" series, and other Liahona text books.
