A FLEETING THOUGHT

Above all, we must remember that quality, not quantity, is the true yardstick of education. American schools, on all levels, must continue to stress training for citizenship and character because these qualities are the qualities essential to freedom.
--Ernest L. Willkinson, BYU Faculty Address, September 18, 1962

Academy Policies

Academy Policies

In keeping with the 13th Article of Faith: “We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things,” the following is a sample of Liahona's student policies. During each prospective student's personal interview with the administrator, a complete list of policies and procedures is reviewed and agreed to by the student before acceptance into the academy.

Students are expected to abide by the moral and health standards of the LDS church in their private lives and at the academy. In addition, Liahona has specific guidelines which must be adhered to. We subscribe to the philosophy expressed by LDS President Spencer W. Kimball in an address to Brigham Young University. “Attendance .... is a privilege and not a right, and....students who attend must expect to live its standards or forfeit the privilege.” Disregard of the academy’s policies will result in disciplinary action. Please refer to the Policy and Procedure pamphlet available from the office for further details.
Classroom/On-Premise Policies:

    1. Teachers and fellow students will be treated with respect, kindness and compassion.
    2. Teachers and staff will be addressed as “Brother” or “Sister (name)”.
    3. Students will come to class ready to invite the Spirit to help them learn and prepared with their textbooks, scriptures, homework and supplies.
    4. Students are expected to adhere to the highest academic standards and must maintain a C average to remain enrolled. Plagiarism and cheating are cause for expulsion.
    5. Students are being filmed; and as such, their conduct in class must be exemplary.
    6. To aid the student; laptop computers and mini tape recorders may be used only in the classroom and only for note taking purposes.
    7. Games, toys, magazines, novels, or crafts are not allowed in class. Pokemon cards, face cards, tape players, CD players, cell phones or head phones are not allowed on the premises.
    8. Food and drink are allowed ONLY in the Multi-Purpose room. Students may use the microwave and refrigerator while on break, but are responsible to clean up their own trash, spills and mess.
    9. Gum is not allowed on the premises.
    10. If a student damages or breaks school or neighborhood property, the student will be responsible for the cost of repairs or replacement.
    11. Students may not initiate or participate in any activity that is disruptive to the school or the neighborhood.
Dress Code for Everyone:

Our Philosophy: “Do not underestimate the important symbolic and actual effect of appearance. Persons who are well groomed and modestly dressed invite the companionship of the Spirit of our Father in Heaven and are able to exercise a wholesome influence upon those around them. Persons who are unkept and careless about their appearance, or adopt the visual symbols of those who often oppose our ideals, expose themselves and persons around them to influences that are degrading and dissonant. Outward appearance is often a reflection of inward tendencies.” Harold B. Lee.
