Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is Liahona accredited?
Liahona is accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools (NAAS). Liahona offers students the option of enrolling in an accredited track, non-accredited track or a combination.
2. How much does Liahona cost?
Tuition: Tuition ranges from $275 per month for non-accredited status to $355 per month for accredited students. Liahona Foundation pays $50.00 of the base tuition monthly. Elective courses are available after the block of core classes and may be taken for credit or enrichment. Costs for these classes are in addition to the regular monthly tuition. Textbooks are approximately $180 per year depending upon the level and are in addition to tuition. Registration Fee: There is a non-refundable annual $100 per student registration fee.
3. What does my tuition pay for?
It pays for the teachers, the facilities, electricity, the copying of supplemental material, etc.
4. What curriculum do you use and where do I get it?
We feel there is a great need for LDS curriculum for Junior High and High School students. To that end, we have written several LDS academic text books and continue the process of writing and publishing LDS academic text books for future classes. We also search for the best secular books. All classes are supplemented heavily with LDS writers and religious authorities and the standard works are used daily. Books are purchased through Liahona, and a booklist is provided each year. If a book is required that we do not have in stock, we will tell you the best place to obtain it.
5. How does the Liahona Academy Program work?
Liahona Academy is a private school for grades 5 through 12. We teach four core academic subjects with a Latter-day Saint gospel base: History, Science, Language Arts/Grammar, and Math. Our motivating teachers strive to provide a strong academic base, instill a love of learning, integrate revealed gospel principles and encourage patriotism. Four academic levels are available. Parents decide which grade level best suits their student's age and skill level.
Classes are held September through May. Holidays are: One week at Thanksgiving, two weeks at Christmas and one week in the Spring.. Daily class instruction is Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am to 1:20 pm. Fridays are reserved for parental-assigned homework, supplemental work from our website, class-assigned homework or school field-trips. Select elective classes may be offered. Since Utah is a concurrent enrollment state, students may attend Liahona and then attend other classes of their choice at the public high school. Recreational programs will also help parents accomplish the extra-curricular educational goals set for their student.
Most of our classes are filmed and sent to hundreds of home school students from around the nation and internationally. Therefore, student behavior must be exemplary. Students enrolled at Liahona are expected to maintain the highest academic conduct and Latter-day Saint standards. Liahona does not require uniforms, however we do have a strict dress code. Parents and students undergo an interview process and agree to abide by Liahona rules and guidelines before being admitted to the school. Liahona Academy admits students who are motivated and self-disciplined.
Supplemental classes such as music, art, drama, Spanish, and proctored online courses, etc., are offered after regular school hours for an additional fee.
Students in 9th through 12th grades may attend the 8:00 am CES Seminary classes provided by the Pleasant Grove Junior High Seminary. These classes have been coordinated to match our schedule and allow students to graduate from Seminary. Students also have the option to attend their local seminary.
6. What if my student misses school?
If a student has been absent, you may sign up to check out the DVDs which correspond to the days missed as they are returned from the Distance Learning students.
7. Can I start the Liahona program mid-year?
Liahona will accept students mid-year as space is available.
8. How do I adjust Liahona to fit my student's age, challenges, or strengths?
There are many different learning styles and each student's needs are different. By offering the option of accredited and non-accredited classes, we hope to assist parents in helping their students succeed academically. On the non-accredited track, parents may adjust any assignment to better meet a student's individual level and strengths. For example, if you feel an assignment is not challenging enough for your student, you may make the assignment more difficult. If you feel an assignment is above your student's level at this time, you may certainly change the requirements to best allow him to be successful in completing the assignment.
9. Who is the staff at Liahona?
The teachers and staff at Liahona have been involved in home schooling or education for years. They have taught at private schools and colleges and some have taught seminary and institute for the LDS Church Educational System. They are well-qualified in their areas of expertise and most are long-term employees of Liahona.
10. How long does it take for my student to get used to Liahona?
Depending on the student's background, it takes approximately six weeks for a student to adjust and feel comfortable.
