A FLEETING THOUGHT

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

Distance Education
How It Works

Liahona Distance Education Program

How It Works

What We Are
Liahona is a 32 week program which may be used as your main curriculum or as a supplement to your home school program. Three core academic subjects: History, Language Arts/Grammar and Science are available. You may enroll in all three courses or any individual subject. Subjects are filmed daily in front of live classrooms at Liahona Academy in Pleasant Grove, Utah. These subjects are taught with a Latter-day Saint gospel base and divided into a four year rotation. (Please see our “Scope and Sequence” for further explanation.) Both the academy and distance education program are accredited through Northwest Association of Accredited Schools (NAAS). Parents may choose the accredited, non-accredited or a combination track.

Our motivating teachers are well-qualified in their subjects and strive to provide a strong academic base, instill a love of learning, integrate revealed gospel principles and encourage patriotism. Three academic levels are available:

    Intermediate (6th, 7th and 8th grade)
    Freshman ( 9th and 10th grade)
    Senior (11th and 12th grade)

Parents decide which of the three levels best suits their child’s skills and age. Classes and homework are designed so that students remain under the direction of their parents. Specifics of how to best use Liahona are provided upon enrollment in our Policies and Procedures Pamphlet. Materials will not be sent until all required paperwork has been received by Liahona.
DVDs
Weekly DVDs contain instruction in the three subjects totaling two hours a day, four days a week. DVDs arrive approximately one week after they are filmed. If enrolled in the full program, students spend about three or four hours a day, four days a week, watching the classes and completing assignments. DVDs are available September through May, for a total of 32 weeks. (Past year’s classes are not available at this time.) Classes may be watched at any time which is convenient for the student and family. Students may enroll or terminate enrollment at any time. We request that DVDs be returned 30 days after you receive them. However, the pace can be adjusted for family vacations, illness or other disturbances. If DVDs are not returned, an additional fee will be charged. Liahona DVDs are the property of Liahona LLC and are for private home exhibition only. Holiday breaks are taken at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.
Tuition/Fees
There is a yearly non-refundable $50 per student registration fee. Tuition is determined by the program and level you are enrolled in. First and last month's tuition is payable at the time of registration.  The following information is a brief explanation of the programs and levels available. Please see the Enrollment Agreement, Tuition Option page, for specific tuition prices and discounts.   Textbooks are approximately $180 per year depending upon the level and are in addition to tuition.

    Programs

Program One: a student is enrolled in all three classes per month. The classes may be accredited or non-accredited, according to your choice. This program is available to all levels of students. Tuition options are from $30 a month to $170 a month.
Program Two: a student is enrolled in two classes per month. The classes may be accredited or non-accredited, according to your choice. This program is NOT available to any secondary level students. Tuition options are from $100 a month to $140 a month.
Program Three: a student is enrolled in one class per month. The classes may be accredited or not, according to your choice. This program is NOT available to any secondary level students. Tuition options are from $65 a month to $85 a month.

    Levels of Students

Primary Student: the first student or oldest enrolled student in any academic level in a family or group.

Tuition discounts are available for the following groupings:
Secondary Primary Student: a student within a family or group which needs a different level than the Primary student. Such as; the Primary student may need the Freshman level but her sibling or a neighbor wants to take the Intermediate level. Some families or co-op groups need all three academic levels. Secondary Primary students receive a tuition Discount because they are attached to a Primary student. Primary families are responsible for the DVDs and tuition and may only enroll in Program One. Accreditation or non-accreditation is determined by each student.

Family Secondary Student: a sibling within a family who is enrolled in the same academic level as the Primary student. Such as; two brothers are enrolled in the Senior level. One brother would be classified as the Primary student, the other brother would be the Family Secondary student. This option is only available for those enrolled in Program One but accreditation or non-accreditation is determined by each student.

Group Secondary Student: a student who is a friend, neighbor, in the same co-op, etc., who is enrolled in the same academic level as the Primary student. Such as; a student in your ward wants to watch the DVDs after your student. Your student would be classified as the Primary student and the student in your ward as the Group Secondary student. This option works especially well for co-op groups who want to save money. Primary families are responsible for the DVDs and tuition. This option is only available for those enrolled in Program One but accreditation or non-accreditation is determined by each student.

Student Involvement
Students from the Academy and Distance Education program often develop close friendships. To help us introduce students to each other, all students are asked to fill out “Getting to Know You” questions in the secure portion of our website. This information provides a forum for students to meet and develop friendships. Distance Education students may correspond with academy students and staff by phone, mail, or email. All Liahona Distance Education students and parents are invited to join academy students and staff at the annual Fall Youth Conference and Summer Super/Service Trip. Youth Conference is held in October at BYU’s “Aspen Grove” Alumni Complex in Provo Canyon. The Super Trip is held each summer and provides a memory-making experience at a destination rich in history and where we can provide service. Cost and destination vary yearly. All students are invited to be included in the yearbook. Graduating seniors, both accredited and non-accredited, may participate in our graduation ceremonies.
Website
Once enrolled with Liahona, access information is provided for the secure portion of our website. We strongly encourage parents to frequently access needed information from the website. There are tools for parents and students, such as a Weekly Outline section where teachers post daily assignments, notes, supplemental material, answer keys and important class information, an area to check student scores, Getting To Know You profiles and other helpful educational information.
ACT Test
Every spring Liahona students, 9th - 12th grade, take the ACT practice test. This prepares them to take the official ACT test by their Junior and Senior years and is one reason our students score points higher than their public school counterparts.
Certificates of Completion/Transcripts
Yearly Certificates of Completion are sent to Liahona Distance Education students who have completed at least 28 of 32 weeks with a C average on 80% of the work or if they have completed the educational goals as outlined by their parents.

Accredited Transcript Option: Students on the accredited track email scores and assignments to Liahona. Scores are posted in the secure portion of the website. Liahona will generate yearly transcripts. Accredited classes may be used to bolster your home school program. Students who desire a diploma may combined credits from Liahona with credits from other educational institutions.
Non-Accredited Transcript Option: Parents track homework and scores and assign grades. Students may receive a yearly transcript with or without grades for the year but no credits will be assigned and parents attest to grade accuracy.
Graduation
Twelfth-grade students who desire to graduate from Liahona must have completed 4 years of Liahona studies. They may graduate from the accredited track with credits or the non-accredited home school track without credits. If a student has not been enrolled with Liahona for 4 years, they must provide transcripts or proof of educational skills from previous years. For the accredited track, students must have achieved a minimum of a C average on 85% of the assignments and tests. For the non-accredited track, students must have achieved a minimum of a C average on 85% of the assignments and tests or have a signed statement from their parents confirming that all parental educational goals have been met. Senior class students who desire to continue on to college are strongly encouraged to take the yearly ACT test and keep a portfolio.
