A FLEETING THOUGHT
That, it seems to me, is the key to true education. No man can receive a fulness of truth unless he keeps the commandments of our Father in heaven. Learning is not wisdom. We have been misled into thinking that learning is the ultimate in education. True education must result in wisdom. --Elder Joseph F. Smith (Conference Report, April 1946, Second Day Morning Meeting,62.)

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is Liahona accredited?
Liahona is accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools (NAAS)and now offers several options to our distance learning families. Students may enroll in the accredited track, non-accredited track or a combination. Classes include the same material and homework. The accredited track supplies students with transcripts and diplomas. The non-accredited track relies on the student's portfolio and ACT or SAT score for college entrance.
2. How much does Liahona cost?
Tuition: Tuition is $170 per month for the full program of accredited classes for the "primary" student in any class level and $110 per month for the full program of non-accredited classes. Families who need multiple class levels may receive a discount on the second and third levels. For details on program options, tuition breakdown and family discounts, please refer to "How it Works" and the "Enrollment Agreement" form. Textbooks are approximately $180 per year depending upon the level and are in addition to tuition.
Registration Fee: There is an annual $50 per student registration fee. First and last month's tuition is due at time of registration. Should a student drop out and come back mid-year they will be charged another registration fee.
3. What does my tuition pay for?
It pays for operating costs at Liahona, i.e., teachers, DVD costs, mailing costs, electricity, duplicating costs, the copying of supplemental material, etc.
4. What curriculum do you use and where do I get it?
We feel there is a great need for LDS curriculum for Junior High and High School students. To that end, we have written LDS academic text books for this year's course of study and continue the process of writing and publishing LDS academic text books for future classes. We also search for the best secular books. All classes are supplemented heavily with LDS writers and religious authorities and the standard works are used daily. Books are usually purchased through Liahona, and a booklist is provided each year. If a book is required that we do not have in stock, we will tell you the best place to obtain it.
5. How does the Distance Learning Program work and how does this coordinate with my current family home schooling activities?
Weekly DVDs contain instruction in the three core subjects of History, Science and English. Students spend about three or four hours a day, four days a week, watching the classes and completing assignments. Classes are filmed live at Liahona Academy in Pleasant Grove, Utah. DVDs arrive at your home approximately one week after they are filmed. DVDs are available September through May, for a total of 32 weeks. The week may be watched at any time convenient for the student and family. Students may enroll or terminate enrollment at any time. Students enjoy the classroom setting and our motivational teachers. Parents appreciate that the Liahona program is user-friendly and flexible. Your Liahona students can view their DVDs while you are working with your other children. The pace can also be adjusted to accommodate family vacations, illness, or other scheduling disturbances. Holiday breaks are taken at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.
6. How long does it take for my student to get used to the Liahona program?
Depending on your student's background, it can take up to six weeks for a student to adjust and feel comfortable.
8. How do I adjust Liahona to fit my student’s age, challenges, or strengths?
There are many different learning styles and each student's needs are different. Parents may adjust any assignment to better meet a student’s individual level and strengths. For example, if you feel an assignment is not challenging enough for your student, you may make the assignment more difficult. If you feel an assignment is above your student's level at this time, you may certainly change the requirements to best allow him to be successful in completing the assignment.
9. Who corrects my student’s homework assignments?
Students enrolled in accredited classes email their scores and assignments to Liahona. The scores are then entered on the secure portion of our website. For students enrolled in non-accredited classes, parents correct homework and assign grades.
10. Can I start the Liahona program mid-year? If I've enrolled late, may I get DVDs of classes from the beginning of the year?
Liahona will accept students mid-year. DVDs from the beginning of the year are not available. It can be overwhelming for a student to feel like they are trying to “catch up”. Your student will begin wherever the Academy classes are in their studies. You as the parent can adjust the assignments to compensate for the missed material as your student is adjusting to the subjects and the program.
11. Can I get previous years’ programs?
At this point in time, we do not offer past years’ programs. We make every effort to include current discoveries, events and happenings in our classes. We have found it is much more beneficial for the student to participate in the Liahona program currently in session.
12. What if I want to take only one class?
You may enroll in just one class. For details on program options please refer to "How it Works" and the "Enrollment Agreement" form.
13. If I have a problem with my DVD, how do I contact someone at Liahona?
The office staff may be contacted by telephone (801) 785-7850 or via e-mail.
14. Where are the classes filmed?
We film classes at the Liahona Academy in Pleasant Grove, Utah.
15. Will my student have interaction with other students?
Yes, they may attend Fall Youth Conferences held at Aspen Grove, Utah, or the Summer Super Trips. They may also interact via the website or email.
16. Who is the staff at Liahona?
The teachers and staff at Liahona have been involved in home schooling or education for years. They have taught at private schools and colleges and some have taught seminary and institute for the LDS Church Educational System. They are well-qualified in their areas of expertise and most are long-term employees of Liahona.
